7 Indie Artists You Just Need to Have on Your IPod ...

The world of indie artists is my happy place. I’m not one of those fans who never want their favorite band to go mainstream (aren’t they just annoying?) but, I do take pleasure in knowing that an off-the-radar band is all mine until they take off. Take a look at some amazing indie artists that deserve a spot on your iPod! You’ll be jamming out to them for days, I promise you.

1 Little Green Cars

This Irish band is simply awesome. “Harper Lee” was the first video of theirs that I watched and I’ve been hooked ever since. A lot of their songs revolve around the harmonies of lead singers Stevie Appleby and Faye O’Rourke, but they take turns on taking the lead. For example, Stevie takes the lead in “Harper Lee”, while Faye takes the lead in “My Love Took Me Down To The River To Silence Me”. They opened up for Jake Bugg on his UK tour and they’re starting to get a big following here in the US. If you haven’t heard of them, listen to these awesome indie artists!

Frequently asked questions

2 The 1975

Seeing as how big the band has become, I’m sure you already have a couple of their songs on your iPod! The 1975 are an English indie rock band with really catchy songs. They’ve had a couple of US shows and managed to sell them out! They come back to NYC in December (I have tickets, yay!) and then again in May. I’m super excited to watch these boys perform live. They’re totally my favorite band at the moment.

3 Angus & Julia Stone

This brother/sister duo has been around for such a long time but you’d be surprised at the amount of people who still don’t know about their magical tunes. The song that made me fall in love with them was “Big Jet Plane”. I still listen to it daily! Individually, they each have a hauntingly beautiful voice. Together, they’re just mesmerizing. The duo took some time off to focus on separate projects but they are recording together again! I can’t wait for new music, and maybe even a tour?

4 Everything Everything

You know those times where you log into YouTube to watch a certain music video but then, hours later, end up discovering all these amazing new bands? That’s how I came across Everything Everything. I watched their “Cough Cough” music video and I’ve been obsessed with them since then. When the lead singer, Jonathan Higgs, was asked about the band’s sound, he answered: “We’re not really interested in copying certain genres or anything, so I guess you’d say it’s unpredictable and sort of surprising.” That’s exactly right. The band has been busy with a sold out UK tour, and I can’t wait for them to hit the US!

5 The Popopopops

This indie band is awesome. I wanted to share the acoustic version with you all so that you could really hear their talent. They sound just like the studio version of their songs. It’s a shame that they haven’t blown up yet in the music industry. I’m not worried though, their talent will be recognized by a lot more people very soon! For now, we can all take pleasure from having this band all to ourselves for a little while.

6 Bastille

If you haven’t already heard of Bastille, you’re living life wrong. This indie band is incredible. They’re from the UK and are gaining such a huge following in the US. Their January NYC show sold out in less than an hour. Impressive, huh? I’m definitely going to be looking for a way to snag some tickets because I need to see them perform live! They’re the kind of band that manage to sound better live than recorded. I think that’s amazing musicianship.

7 Kid Astray

This was just a random click I made on YouTube, and boy am I glad I stumbled upon this! Kid Astray is an indie-pop collective from Norway. The hype around the band has been getting bigger and bigger lately as they make moves across Europe. I love their debut single, “The Mess” and their EP, “Easily Led Astray”! I really hope they make their way to the US soon. I’d love to see them perform live.

That sums up the list for indie artists you just need to have on your iPod! Don’t get me wrong, there are so many more amazing artists out there. Limiting it to only 7 was pretty tough but I think these artists are definitely worth checking out. What indie artists do you think should make the next list?
