Every girl needs some songs to get you through a breakup. After all, losing a love, whether it was your choice or his, is very hard to do. You will be feeling all kinds of emotions, from sadness to guilt to anger. Music is a great outlet for working through those feelings. That's why you should add these songs to get you through a breakup to your playlist.
1 One Last Time by Ariana Grande
This song is perfect to start off any breakup playlist. Grande sings, “I know she gives you everything, but boy, I couldn’t give it to ya…I know that you got everything, but I got nothing here without ya.” It laments the loss of the lover and wanting to have that person one last time. Post-breakup, it’s easy to fall back into old habits and desire what we once had, but it’s important to embrace these feelings while realizing you should never wait for “one last time” before moving on. This is one of my favorite songs to get you through a breakup.
2 New Rules by Dua Lipa
This is another song warning about getting back together with your ex-lover. The lyrics read, “One, don’t pick up the phone. You know he’s only calling ‘cause he’s drunk and alone.” Just like you shouldn’t call your ex just because you’re feeling lonely, you have to resist the temptation to be lured back in, which can be hard when breakup wounds are fresh. The relationship didn’t work and you can’t let it continue to drag you down. In the words of Dua Lipa, “and if you’re under him, you ain’t getting over him.” Learn from your mistakes and don’t go back to a relationship that caused you heartache.
3 Stop Crying Your Heart out by Oasis
This throwback song is great for when you’re bawling your eyes out, feeling incapacitated by the loss of your relationship. Its soulful lyrics will help you unblock any emotions you’ve bottled up. Breakups are hard and there’s nothing wrong with shedding a few tears, but the sooner you can let it all out, the better you’ll feel. Breakups are scary but, “don’t be scared. You’ll never change what’s been and gone.”
4 Irreplaceable by Beyoncé
We all know the famous lyrics, “to the left, to the left, everything you own in a box to the left.” This song will perk up your mood. It’s all about packing a relationship up, acknowledging that you’ll find love again. The end of one relationship doesn’t mean your dating future is bleak. Any significant other who can’t see your inherent value isn’t worth your time; he’s replaceable.
5 Sober up by AJR Feat. Rivers Cuomo
This gem from the alternative charts talks about “wanting to feel something again.” Anyone who has mourned the loss of a relationship knows there’s always that numbness where you can hardly fathom that it’s over. This song is the perfect upbeat anthem for when you need to bust a few moves and get in tune with your feelings.
6 We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift
The title of the song speaks for itself. There’s nothing like a little Taylor Swift to empower you and lift your spirits amid a bad breakup. It’s a song for when you’ve accepted that breaking up doesn’t have to be sad but can be liberating.
7 No Roots by Alice Merton
“I’ve got no roots, but my home was never on the ground,” Merton sings. This song is a Florence and the Machine-esque tune that celebrates not being tied down. Being single doesn’t mean you won’t have any fun! You’ll have the freedom to do as you please without your significant other to consider. Enjoy the freedom while you can!
8 Without You by Avicii Feat. Sandro Cavazza
Maybe your life was pretty much enmeshed with your S.O.’s but flip on this song and dance the night the way as you celebrate that you don’t need that person anymore. There’s no better feeling than realizing that there’s nothing wrong with doing things alone. Embrace your independence and sing, “I gotta learn how to love without you, I gotta carry my cross without you.”
9 You Need Me, I Don’t Need You by Ed Sheeran
A little old school Ed Sheeran will put you in a chipper mood. While the song is mostly shading the music industry, it works perfectly in a breakup scenario as well because who wouldn’t love to shout at their ex, “You need me, man, I don’t need you!” You’re your own person and can handle whatever life throws at you.
10 Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson
This song is the kind of song you sing when you’ve finally accepted the breakup. It’s screaming at the top of your lungs that not only are you okay, but you’re better than before. It’s realizing that “since you been gone, I can breathe for the first time.” This is the ultimate moving on song. “Thanks to you, now I get what I want,” Clarkson sings passionately. Cry your eyes out, be angry, but remember that in the end, you’ll feel a lot better.
