Some of my favorite music in Disney movies are the songs sung by Disney villains. Disney villains are the characters we love to hate, and most of them get at least one good song in before they are defeated by the film’s hero. These songs work to expose the motives of the villains as well as show the audience how dark their personalities really can be. So here are the songs sung by Disney villains that we just can’t help but love!
One of my absolute favorite songs sung by Disney villains is "Poor Unfortunate Souls" from the Disney classic, The Little Mermaid. The song is sung by Ursula the Sea Witch to the Little Mermaid herself, Ariel. The song seduces Ariel into trading her voice for a pair of legs. The song is done in Broadway style, making it incredibly catchy!
Danny Elfman wrote each of the tracks for the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. One of the best songs from the film is also one of the best songs sung by a Disney villain. Oogie Boogie’s song is sung by – you guessed it – Oogie Boogie. Oogie sings it to Santa Claus as he has him trapped in his lair. The sinister song is sung as the “Sandy Claus” is being tortured by Oogie Boogie.
"I Put a Spell on You" was originally recorded in the '50s by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. However, Disney added the track in the Halloween classic, Hocus Pocus. Multi-talented artist Bette Midler performs the song in the film and it remains one of my favorite performances by The Divine Miss M.
"Mother Knows Best" is from one of Disney’s newest movies, Tangled. The song is sung by the villain from the film, Mother Gothel, primarily with Rapunzel singing a few lines. Mother Gothel sings the song to Rapunzel to convince her she doesn’t need to leave the house “for her own good.”
Gaston isn’t the only person that sings his trademark song. Initially, "Gaston" is sung by LeFou, Gaston’s friends, and some of the townsfolk before Gaston joins in. This Beauty and the Beast classic is undeniably one of the best Disney songs sung by a villain.
Scar, in my opinion, is the most evil of all the Disney villains. The lyrics were written by Tim Rice, and Elton John composed the music. Scar sings "Be Prepared" to his hyena henchmen, where he goes through different plots to make him king of Pride Rock. In the end, Scar settles on a scheme that will kill the current king, his brother Mufasa, and his nephew Simba.
This chilling song is performed in a spooky graveyard in Paris, France. Clopin performs this dark humored song, where he threatens Quasimodo and Phoebus that, “it’s a miracle if you get out alive!” Clopin sets the song up as a mock trial, where he transforms into the judge, jury, and executioner.
The songs sung by Disney villains in the films are usually my favorites. I love the sinister plots outlined in the lyrics as well as the charisma that villains have while performing the tunes. These are the 7 songs we just can’t get enough of! What are your favorite songs sung by Disney villains? Share them with us in the comments!
